A Thankful Heart
Devotional:
“I will praise the Lord at all times; His praise will always be on my lips.”
Psalm 34:1 (HCSB)
Psalm 34 was written after David pretended to be insane in order to escape death. Fleeing from King Saul, David sought refuge with King Achish. When the king’s servants recognized him, David realized his life was in danger and resorted to a desperate plan to survive, posing as a madman.
This was a deeply distressing season for David. So when he declared, “I will praise the LORD at all times,” he meant in every circumstance, even in fear, uncertainty, and humiliation. David could draw on past experiences when God had faithfully protected and delivered him. He remembered the many times he had cried out to God and had been heard. Each time he sought the Lord, he was never put to shame. God saved him from everything he feared and remained near to him.
David’s testimony reminds us that God is always worthy of praise. At all times, He is worthy of worship. At all times, His name is to be exalted. Every part of David was compelled to praise the Lord.
Praise rises from our hearts when we remember God’s goodness. As we reflect on what He has already delivered us from, gratitude should follow. Even in difficult seasons, remembering what God has done anchors our hearts in hope. Reflective praise shifts our perspective from hardship to His greatness and reinforces our trust in Him. Heaviness and discouragement loosen their grip.
The psalmist reminds us that praise is not only a private act, but something meant to be shared with others. “Glorify the LORD with me; let us exalt His name together” (Psalm 34:3). There is something powerful about worshiping in community. Many voices become one, collectively declaring God's faithfulness and greatness.
Reflect:
When was the last time I intentionally reflected on all God has done for me? How often do I participate in praising God together with other believers?
One Step Forward:
Set aside intentional time today to praise God. Reflect on His attributes (his holiness, love, mercy, wisdom, and power…). Whether through music, prayer, spoken words, or movement, express your gratitude to Him freely and fully.
