What Will You Leave Behind?
Devotional:
2 Kings 2:9–14 (Elijah & Elisha)
Galatians 6:7–9
Legacy is shaped by what we leave behind. Though it may happen without immediate applause, it is not accidental. Seeds do not plant themselves, and harvests do not appear without planning, patience, and perseverance. What we leave in the earth is the result of daily decisions made on purpose. Seeds planted today become fruit long after the planter is gone.
When Elijah was taken up into heaven, he didn’t accidentally leave his cloak behind. That mantle represented years of obedience, sacrifice, and intentional investment. He mentored Elisha and modeled faithfulness over time. When the moment came, Elisha was prepared. What Elijah planted in obedience multiplied in the next generation. That is the power of leaving a legacy.
The same is true for us. Legacy requires saying yes when it’s inconvenient, no when it’s necessary, and staying when quitting would be easier. It looks like choosing consistency over comfort and faithfulness over feelings. Intentionality means deciding in advance what matters most and aligning our lives accordingly.
God has given each of us gifts, talents, and abilities that are specific and unique. No one else can plant what you’ve been entrusted with. To withhold your obedience and diligence is to rob the earth of what God intended to grow through you.
So don’t be consumed by what’s already gone. Don’t stay stuck in regret over wasted time. You still have hours in your days, days in your weeks, and weeks in your years. As God breaks up the soil of your life, the question is not what did you miss, but what will you plant now?
Reflect
What seeds am I planting today that will benefit generations beyond me?
One Step Forward
Identify one gift, habit, or act of obedience God has placed in your hands. Commit to sowing it faithfully.
